In this post, we’ll take a look at Ashwagandha vs Brahmi.

What is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) is an ancient Indian herb that’s been consumed for thousands of years.
It’s a member of the Nightshade plant family, which includes popular plants like potatoes and tomatoes.
Today, Ashwagandha is still widely used thanks to its calming and vitalizing properties.
What is Brahmi?
Like Ashwagandha, Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) is a health boosting herb that’s native to India.
Interestingly, the word Brahmi means the energy of the universal consciousness in Hindu, which shows how highly rated this herb is in Ayurveda.
A lot of the health benefits that Brahmi has to offer are credited to compounds called bacosides.
Benefits of Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha may help lower blood sugar levels
High blood sugar levels are harmful to the body.
Insulin is a vital hormone that helps lower your blood sugar levels when they’re too high.
But over time, your body may become less sensitive to insulin, meaning more needs to be released to manage your blood sugar levels.
This is essentially how type 2 diabetes starts.
Interestingly, Ashwagandha seems to be effective at lowering blood sugar levels.
In one study, 12 subjects took Ashwagandha each day for a month and their blood sugar was lowered by amounts comparable to a blood sugar lowering drug.
Ashwagandha may help boost testosterone levels
After a man has reached his late twenties, his testosterone production will naturally decrease with age.
Unfortunately, this can have both mental and physical adverse effects on one’s health.
For example, research suggests that low T levels may play an important role in depression in aging men.
Well, if you want to keep your T levels as high as possible, then Ashwagandha may be able to help.
In one study, Ashwagandha increased the seminal T levels of infertile males.
Ashwagandha may help increase muscle size and strength
If you search for the best bulking supplements on Google, you probably won’t see Ashwagandha mentioned anywhere.
But that isn’t to say Ashwagandha is bad for bulking.
In one study, 57 subjects took either 600mg of Ashwagandha or a placebo each day for 8 weeks.
Those in the Ashwagandha group had bigger increases in fat loss, muscle gain, muscle strength and testosterone than the placebo group.
Ashwagandha may help improve anxiety symptoms
According to research, Ashwagandha may help relieve anxiety symptoms.
In one study, the subjects took either Ashwagandha or a placebo each day for 2 months.
By the end of the study, the Ashwagandha takers had a bigger reduction in scores on the “stress test” than the placebo group.
In another study, the subjects took either Ashwagandha or a placebo each day for 6 weeks.
By the end of the study, 88% of the Ashwagandha group had less anxiety.
Benefits of Brahmi
Brahmi may improve ADHD symptoms
ADHD is a mental disorder that’s characterized by symptoms like impulsivity, restfulness, and inability to focus.
According to research, Brahmi may help improve ADHD symptoms.
In a study of 120 children with ADHD, those who took a herbal mixture containing Brahmi had improved attention, cognition, and impulse control compared to the placebo group.
In another study, 31 children with ADHD took 225mg of Brahmi per day for 6 months.
By the end of the study, 93% of the children had improved restlessness, 89% of the children had improved self-control and 85% of the children had improved attention.
Brahmi may enhance cognitive function
Many people turn towards natural herbs, like Brahmi, to improve their mental function.
In one study, 60 elderly subjects took either 300mg of Brahmi, 600mg of Brahmi, or a placebo each day for 12 weeks.
The results showed that the Brahmi groups had significantly improved memory and attention compared with the placebo group.
In another study, the subjects took either 300mg of Brahmi or a placebo each day for 12 weeks.
The results showed that the Brahmi group had significantly improved memory, learning rate and speed of visual information processing compared with the placebo group.
Brahmi is rich in antioxidants
Free radical build-up can lead to oxidative stress, which is thought to play a key role in aging and many serious diseases.
Antioxidants are powerful molecules which can help combat free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a younger, healthier you.
Brahmi contains compounds called bacosides, which have been shown to neutralize free radicals and prevent lipid peroxidation. (Source)
Brahmi may help reduce inflammation
Chronic inflammation is linked to many different health conditions, including:
- Leaky gut
- Heart disease
So, a great way to lower your risk of these nasty diseases is to lower your inflammation levels.
In test tube studies, Brahmi has been shown to inhibit the release of TNF-alpha and IL-6. (Source)
These are both pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are molecules that induce an inflammatory response from the immune system.
Ashwagandha is usually sold in tablets or as a liquid extract.

Ashwagandha Side Effects
Although Ashwagandha is typically safe to supplement with, some people might notice the following side effects:
- Stomach upset
Since Ashwagandha may lower your blood sugar levels, those taking blood sugar lowering medication should speak to a doctor before taking Ashwagandha.
The following people should avoid Ashwagandha:
- Pregnant women
- Those with stomach ulcers
- People with low/high blood pressure
- Those who are allergic to Nightshade plants, i.e. Tomatoes, Potatoes, etc.
- People with autoimmune conditions, i.e. Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc.
Brahmi Side Effects
Like Ashwagandha, Brahmi is generally safe to supplement with, but it might cause some side effects, including:
- Stomach upset
Due to a lack of studies on its safety, pregnant women should avoid Brahmi.
Also, Brahmi may interact with certain medications, so if you’re taking any medications, then please speak to a doctor before taking Brahmi.
My Ashwagandha Recommendation: NaturaLife Labs Ashwagandha

What I like about it
Since it’s powdered, you can easily chop and change the dosage to meet your specific needs.
(It’s likely that some of you will respond better to a higher dose and others to a lower dose.)
And as it’s a pure organic powder, there are no nasty additives, chemicals, pesticides, or preservatives you need to watch out for.
