Being a man has some advantages and some disadvantages.
A few examples of the disadvantages include:
- A shorter life expectancy
- More likely to die from suicide
- More likely to die in the workplace
A few examples of the advantages include:
- Not having to experience childbirth
- Not having to experience menopause
Now, as a man, I obviously can’t comment first-hand on experiencing menopause.
However I can provide the latest research on menopause and how to reduce menopausal symptoms.
This article in particular explores using fish oil for menopause.
But before we cut to the chase, let’s find out a bit more about menopause.
What Exactly is Menopause?
Menopause is the time that signals the end of your menstrual cycles.
By definition, it’s diagnosed after you’ve gone a full year without a menstrual period.
For women in the United States, the average age for menopause is 51, but it can happen in your 40s too.
Although menopause is a natural process, it may result in a few unwanted symptoms, including:
- Hot flashes
- Weight gain
- Night sweats
- Memory loss
- Poor sleep quality
These symptoms may differ from woman to woman so if you’re lucky, you may not notice any, but if you’re unfortunate, you may experience them all.
Why Fish Oil is Good For Menopause
You’re making a great decision by using fish oil for menopause.
Before we reveal the best fish oil supplements, here are a few reasons why fish oil is great for menopause – proof you’re about to make a wise purchase!
Fish oil may reduce depression
According to the WHO, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.
In fact, it’s estimated that more than 300 million people are living with depression.
Whilst this is tragic in itself, the bad news is that those who are going through menopause are more likely to have depressive episodes.
If you’re concerned that you may experience depression during menopause, or if you already are experiencing depression, then I bring you good news…
Research has shown that fish oil can reduce depression.
For example, an 8-week study of 28 people with depression investigated how Omega-3 (found in fish oil) affected their depression.
The results showed that those who took Omega-3 had a significantly lower depression score than those who took a placebo.
Fish oil may reduce hot flashes
One of the most common complaints about menopause is hot flashes.
This annoying symptom affects around 75% of women who are near menopause, and can continue for up to 10 years after a woman has reached menopause.
Women who suffer from hot flashes may notice the following:
- A red face
- Warm skin
- Tingling fingers
- A faster heartbeat
So it’s fair to say that hot flashes can be a massive pain in the ass.
Well, you’ll be pleased to know that fish oil may be able to improve these symptoms.
A study investigated the effects of menopausal women taking 2g of Omega-3 (found in fish oil) every day for 8 weeks.
Out of the 20 women in the study, 15 of them experienced hot flashes.
By the end of the study, the women with hot flashes reported a lower number of hot flashes each day and these were less intense than before the study.
Fish oil may reduce memory loss
As you get older, your ovaries produce fewer eggs and eventually stop entirely.
Your body responds by reducing the production of Estrogen, since the hormone is no longer needed for reproduction.
A lot of the symptoms of menopause, including memory loss, can be attributed to this decreased production of Estrogen.
But memory loss can also be worsened by poor sleep quality – another symptom of menopause.
In other words, menopause can mess with your memory in multiple ways:
- It can affect it directly by lowering Estrogen production
- It can affect it indirectly by impacting sleep quality
If you are concerned about memory loss, then you may want to give fish oil a try as research has shown it can protect you from it.
Best Budget Fish Oil for Menopause: Horbaach Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil
This fish oil supplement is an affordable, decent quality and long-lasting option for those with a smaller budget.
Why I like it
When you consider the low price, this is a fine supplement, making it a great value buy.
It has some excellent reviews too, which shows that many others are using it with good results.
A great feature is that this fish oil is obtained from wild Salmon.
It’s believed that wild Salmon has less impurities, like antibiotics and dioxins, than regular farmed Salmon, making this a “cleaner” option than other supplements out there.
And as a bonus, wild Salmon is more environmentally friendly since Salmon farms can cause sea pollution.
You can’t expect a budget range supplement to be perfect, and Horbaach Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil isn’t by any means.
Although it ticks many boxes, each capsule contains only 210mg of Omega-3.
When you consider that a lot of the menopausal symptom improvements are credited to Omega-3, we want this amount to be as high as possible.
Best Mid-Range Fish Oil for Menopause: Sports Research Wild Alaskan Pollock Oil
Sports Research Wild Alaskan Pollock Oil ranks alongside the best fish oil supplements on the market. And as it’s in the mid-range, it’s affordable for many so is the perfect choice for most people.
With each bottle containing 180 softgel capsules, it’ll last you a long, long time too.
Why I like it
Like Horbaach Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, this fish oil is sourced from wild fish meaning you don’t have to worry about any nasty contaminants that’s found in farmed fish.
I also like that the softgel capsule is made from Fish gelatin, which makes it suitable for pescatarians.
(Most softgel capsules are made from Beef Gelatin.)
In my eyes, the best feature of this supplement is the strength.
With each capsule containing 1037mg of Omega-3, this is one of the strongest fish oils available, and nearly 5x stronger than the recommended budget choice!
And as mentioned earlier, the more Omega-3, the better it is at tackling menopausal symptoms.
So with that in mind, this is the one supplement you need if you’re serious at making menopause more bearable.
Truth be told, there’s very little room for improvement here.
The only downside is it may be out of the budget of some people.
Best Premium Fish Oil for Menopause: Nutrigold Triple Strength Wild Alaskan Fish Oil
Exactly what you’d expect from a premium fish oil supplement.
Premium quality. Premium strength. And unfortunately, a premium price.
Why I like it
Each capsule contains an enormous 1050mg of Omega-3, making it possibly the strongest fish oil on the market.
(Yep… even stronger than my mid-range recommendation.)
This makes it excellent for menopause as we want this Omega-3 amount to be high for best results.
I also have a lot of time for Nutrigold as a supplement brand.
They’re trustworthy, reliable and are known for making top quality products.
I wouldn’t buy this supplement if you’re tight on cash, as the mid-range recommendation is almost as good for a bit cheaper.
Apart from that though, this is the real deal.
Going through menopause can be one of the toughest experiences of a woman’s life.
But let me reassure you…
…It doesn’t have to be this way.
