Whilst we all may experience painful joints, fatigue and loss of appetite once in a while, these are symptoms that rheumatoid arthritis sufferers experience every single day…
And even though the severity of rheumatoid arthritis differs from person to person, I’m sure that each and every one of the 1.5 million US citizens who suffer from it will agree that it sucks.
Now, the bad news is that rheumatoid arthritis is incurable.
In other words, once you’re diagnosed with it, you’ll probably have to deal with it for the rest of your life.
(This is because it’s an auto-immune disease, so it’s nigh on impossible to identify the exact cause, and thus the exact solution/cure.)
But the good news is that a lot of the troubles people with rheumatoid arthritis face can be minimized by living a healthy, low inflammation lifestyle, as well as using certain supplements, such as probiotics.
Why Probiotics Are Good For Rheumatoid Arthritis
You’re making a great decision by using probiotics to help with rheumatoid arthritis.
Before we cover the best probiotics, here are a few reasons why probiotics are great for rheumatoid arthritis – proof you’re about to make a smart purchase!
Probiotics may lower inflammation
One of the hallmark symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis – joint pain – is caused by local inflammation.
So to reduce this joint pain, you should focus on lowering inflammation.
Well, research suggests that probiotics help lower inflammation by modulating your immune cells.
In other words, they help prevent your immune system from overreacting.
(Which is exactly what happens in people with rheumatoid arthritis by the way…)

Probiotics may reduce depression
It’s estimated that a whopping 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide.
Whilst this is tragic in itself, the bad news is that people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to experience depression.
If you’re worried that you may experience depression, or if you already are facing depression, then let me tell you some good news…
Research has shown that probiotics can reduce depression.
For example, an 8-week study on 40 people with depression investigated how probiotics affected their depression scores.
The results showed that those who took probiotics had a significantly lower depression score than the placebo takers.
Probiotics may reduce obesity
Right now, you may be thinking:
What on earth does obesity have to do with rheumatoid arthritis?
Well, around two thirds of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers are overweight or obese, and being overweight can worse your symptoms.
In simple terms, excess body fat releases high amounts of cytokines.
These are proteins which increase inflammation, and thus can make your rheumatoid arthritis more troublesome.
So to minimize the complications of rheumatoid arthritis, your goal should be to avoid obesity.
Now, the probiotics & obesity connection can be summarized in a simple study, which went like this…
Gut bacteria were taken from a group of women who were twins. One of the twins was lean and the other was obese.
They then transferred the gut bacteria from these women into germ-free mice.
(Germ-free just means that the mice had no bacteria in their gut to begin with, making this a fair experiment.)
The mice which received gut bacteria from the lean women… stayed lean.
And the mice which received gut bacteria from the obese women…. became obese!
Now, what’s even more fascinating is both groups of mice ate the same amount of food.
This tells us that the quality of bacteria in your gut has a massive effect on your size.
So by increasing the amount of healthy bacteria in your gut by taking probiotics, you’re more likely to be a healthy weight.

Best Budget Probiotics for Rheumatoid Arthritis: Doctor’s Best Digestive Health Probiotics
A cheap and cheerful option from a highly respected brand.
Great for those on a very tight budget.
Why I like it
Let’s start with the obvious benefit.
A lot of probiotics out there cost a fair amount of dollars, but Doctor’s Best Digestive Health Probiotics are fantastic value for money.
Another great benefit is that the bacteria used in this supplement, LactoSpore, help prevent the growth of bad bacteria and allow good bacteria to dominate your gut.
This will help an awful lot for lowering inflammation, which is key for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.
I’m also a massive fan of Doctor’s Best as a supplement brand.
In a somewhat unreliable industry, they’re one of the most trustworthy brands out there and they deliver on their promises.
Each capsule contains only 2 Billion CFUs.
(CFUs aka Colony-forming units represent the number of active bacteria there are in each capsule. Whilst 2 Billion is a huge number, this is pretty small compared to other probiotics out there.)
Apart from that, there’s little more you can ask for in a budget probiotic.
Best Mid-Range Probiotics for Rheumatoid Arthritis: Dr Mercola Complete Probiotics
A high-strength Probiotic supplement that comes mixed with Prebiotics.
(More on that soon…)
I’ve been taking this probiotic on and off for many months and can confirm first hand that it’s an excellent supplement.
Why I like it
With 10 different strains of bacteria, these capsules will improve your health in many different ways.
(Each bacteria strain provides a different benefit. So the more strains there are, the more benefits.)
Also, these capsules contain Fructooligosaccharides, which are a type of Prebiotic.
These are a food source for the Probiotics so they can divide and multiply, which are crucial for the effectiveness of the capsules.
Another great feature is that these probiotics are packaged with a desiccant (as shown below.)
This absorbs the moisture within the bottle which ensures the living conditions for the bacteria are optimal.
I’d personally like to see less other ingredients included, as I’m quite fussy with what I put in my body!
Best Premium Probiotics for Rheumatoid Arthritis: SEDDS Super GI Probiotics
Premium quality, high-strength and pretty darn expensive.
The Rolls Royce of Probiotic supplements.
(I’ll be very surprised if you find a better probiotic supplement than this.)
Why I like it
Each capsule contains a whopping 112.5 Billion CFUs.
(Yep, you read that correctly – 112.5 Billion!)
This makes it arguably the strongest probiotic supplement on the market.
And to give you some perspective, this makes it more than 55x stronger than the budget selection!
Another great feature is the diversity of bacteria strains within each capsule.
For example, this supplement provides:
- Bifidobacterium Breve
- Lactobacillus Paracasei
- Lactobacillus Plantarum
- Bifidobacterium Longum
- Bifidobacterium Infantis
- Lactobacillus Acidophilus
- Lactobacillus Bulgaricus
- Streptococcus Thermophilus
Each of these strains will work in different ways to optimize your health and help make rheumatoid arthritis more bearable and easier to live with.
It’s great to see some fantastic reviews too which shows that other people are having excellent results from using this probiotic.
Premium quality products generally have a common downside.
A premium price tag.
So if you’re strapped for cash, you’re probably better off using one of the other probiotics recommended in this article.
A good quality probiotic will help you:
- Reduce depression
- Lower inflammation
- Help prevent obesity
And by reading this article, you now know that each of these benefits are super important for people living with rheumatoid arthritis.
