Generally speaking, there are 3 main ways to increase our ever-so-important vitamin D levels.
- Exposure to UVB radiation (Aka sunlight)
- Eating foods that contain Vitamin D
- Vitamin D supplementation
Whilst exposure to UVB provides other benefits than Vitamin D, it provides some serious trade offs too.
As I’m sure you’ll know, too much exposure to sunlight can result in the dreaded 2 words none of us want to hear – skin cancer.
Unfortunately for men, skin cancer is more common and more fatal in males than in females.
For this reason, you may be thinking that relying solely on sun exposure for vitamin D is a dangerous game.

And whilst many foods contain Vitamin D, such as eggs and mushrooms, the amount simply isn’t enough to have a significant effect on your blood levels.
(You’d need to eat 50 eggs to obtain the same amount of Vitamin D as a standard 2000 IU Vitamin D3 capsule.)
Vitamin D supplementation is a good all-rounder as it’s been proven to increase Vitamin D levels in the blood, without the drawbacks of sun exposure (or having to eat 50 eggs ha).
So in this article, we break down 7 of the best vitamin D supplements for men.
Enjoy!
7. Nature’s Way Vitamin D3
Nature’s Way Vitamin D3 is a decent Vitamin D supplement in the form of liquid softgels. It’s reasonably priced and with 240 softgels per bottle, will last you a long time too.
I’d argue this supplement is more suitable for those who just want to maintain their vitamin D levels, as 2000 IU is a relatively small dose.
What I don’t like about these capsules is that they contain safflower oil.
Contrary to mainstream advice, safflower oil is really bad for you.
(To be honest, the amount of safflower oil in the capsules is probably not gonna do much harm, but at least you’ve been warned…)
To finish on a positive note, Nature’s Way are a brand you can trust.
Their products are TRU – ID verified, meaning they’ve been independently tested to ensure the authenticity of their listed ingredients.
Pros:
- Reasonably priced
- Long-lasting bottle
- Trustworthy brand
- Free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives
Cons:
- Contains safflower oil
- Low-medium strength

6. GNC Vitamin D3
GNC Vitamin D3 provides 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 in a tablet form. Like Nature’s Way, it’s a decent, cost-effective supplement.
As mentioned before, this dosage is probably more suitable for people who are happy maintaining their current Vitamin D levels.
It would be nice if GNC changed their Vitamin D from tablets to soft gel capsules.
This is because Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so taking it in a soft gel capsule helps with absorption.
(Although you could just take these with a fatty meal…)
Founded in 1935, GNC are a long-standing, well known supplement brand so you can definitely trust them with your money.
Pros:
- Cost-effective
- Long-standing, reputable brand
- No artificial flavors or colors
- Free from gluten, wheat, sodium, yeast, dairy or sugar
Cons:
- Tablet form, so may need to consume with fat for better absorption
- Low-medium strength

5. Jarrow Formulas Vegan D3
Jarrow Formulas Vegan D3 is derived from lichen – a plant-like organism composed of algae and fungi, making it the go-to choice of Vitamin D for vegans.
At 5000 IU per capsule, this supplement is great for those wanting to increase their vitamin D levels.
(In fact this is even more important for vegans, who generally have lower Vitamin D levels than omnivores.)
There are 2 minor issues I have with this Vitamin D supplement.
Firstly, it’s rather expensive compared to other supplements.
And also, the Vitamin D is in a capsule rather than a fat-based soft gel, meaning the absorption isn’t optimal.
Pros:
- Vegan friendly
- High strength
- Free from wheat, gluten, soy and dairy
Cons:
- Quite expensive
- Capsule form, so may need to consume with fat for better absorption

4. Now Foods Vitamin D3
NOW Vitamin D3 is a great all-rounder.
With a dose of 5000 IU per soft gel, this supplement is suitable for those wanting to see a rise in their Vitamin D levels.
Since the Vitamin D3 is contained in an olive oil based soft gel, the absorption for this supplement is much better than others which are tablet/capsule based.
And unlike nasty safflower oil, olive oil is actually good for you which is a nice bonus.
For such high-quality Vitamin D3, it’s a generous price too.
I’ve spoken highly of NOW foods in my review of their Zinc Picolinate, and I can personally vouch that their products are high quality.
That’s a fact.
Pros:
- Olive oil based soft gel to help absorption
- High-quality, trustworthy brand
- Free of preservatives
- High strength
Cons:
- Although fair priced, there are similar, cheaper alternatives

3. Nutrigold Vitamin D3 Gold
Nutrigold Vitamin D3 Gold is another supplement in soft gel form that assists with absorption.
What I love about Nutrigold Vitamin D3 is the focus on product quality; for example using Organic olive oil in the soft gel.
This shows that Nutrigold really seek perfection with their products, which is a refreshing change in the supplement industry.
(Most supplement brands use the cheapest fillers possible to maximize profits.)
For such a high-quality product, this is another fair priced Vitamin D supplement.
Pros:
- High-quality
- Organic oil based soft gel to aid absorption
- High-strength
Cons:
- There are cheaper alternatives for those on a tight budget

2. Solgar Vitamin D3
Yet another supplement in the soft gel form, Solgar’s Vitamin D3 is a highly absorbable, super high-strength Vitamin D supplement.
At 10000 IU per soft gel, it’s one of the strongest Vitamin D supplements on the market.
You have been warned.
Solgar is another well-known, trusted and “premium” supplement brand, so it’s not surprising that 98% of Solgar customers recommend them.
In a somewhat shady industry, that is an extremely high approval rating.
It’s a real shame that the soft gels are Safflower oil based, otherwise this would have gotten full marks.
Pros:
- Super high-strength Vitamin D3
- Soft gel based to help with absorption
- No artificial flavors, preservatives or colors
- A premium supplement brand
Cons:
- Contains Safflower oil

I usually find a flaw or 2 with most supplements but I simply can’t with this.
It’s that good.
