Bacopa Monnieri, otherwise known as Brahmi, is a health boosting herb that’s native to India.
Its name loosely translates to the energy of the universal consciousness in Hindu, which shows just how highly rated this herb is.
Many of Bacopa Monnieri’s health benefits are credited to compounds called bacosides.
Benefits of Ginseng
Ginseng may help reduce inflammation
Inflammation can be your friend or foe.
Acute inflammation often happens after an injury, so for example when you bruise your leg.
This type of inflammation tells your body that something’s wrong, and so helps speed up the healing process.
Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, builds up over time and is often the result of living an unhealthy lifestyle.
It’s this type of inflammation that you want to avoid like the plague as it’s been linked to many serious diseases, including:
- Heart disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
So, to reduce your risk of these nasty diseases, you ought to reduce chronic inflammation as much as possible.
And this is where Ginseng is useful.
Research has shown that it helps regulate TNF-alpha, which is a molecule that plays a big role in inflammation.
Ginseng may help boost cognitive function
Many human studies have shown Ginseng’s effectiveness at improving mental performance.
For example, a study of 30 subjects looked at how taking 200mg of daily Ginseng affected their cognitive function.
After just 4 weeks, the subjects showed improvements in mood, mental health, and social functioning.
Another study showed that taking 400mg of daily Ginseng improved calmness and math skill after just 8 days.
Ginseng may help improve erectile dysfunction
The annoying thing about erectile dysfunction (ED) is that it can have many different causes.
For example, oxidative stress in the blood vessels of the penis is a common cause. (Source)

Another potential cause of ED is low nitric oxide levels in the blood.

But research has shown that Ginseng can help improve this.
For example, a study looked at the effects of Ginseng on immune system markers in subjects undergoing chemotherapy.
The results showed that those who took Ginseng had better immune system markers than the others.

Bacopa Monnieri is antioxidant rich
Free radical build-up can lead to oxidative stress, which is believed to play a key role in aging and many serious illnesses.
Antioxidants are powerful molecules which can help combat free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a more vibrant, healthier you.
Research shows that the bacosides found within Bacopa Monnieri can neutralize free radicals and prevent lipid peroxidation.
Bacopa Monnieri may help improve ADHD symptoms
ADHD is a mental disorder that’s characterized by symptoms like restfulness, impulsivity, and inability to focus.
According to research, Bacopa Monnieri can help improve these symptoms.
In one study, 31 children with ADHD took 225mg of daily Bacopa Monnieri for 6 months.
By the end of the study, 93% of the children had improved restfulness, 89% of the children had improved self-control, and 85% of the children had improved attention.
In another study, 120 children with ADHD took either a herbal mixture containing Bacopa Monnieri or a placebo.
Those in the herbal mixture group had bigger improvements in cognition, attention, and impulsivity than the placebo group.
Bacopa Monnieri may help reduce inflammation
Like Ginseng, Bacopa Monnieri may help reduce inflammation levels.
In test tube studies, it’s been shown to inhibit the release of TNF-alpha and IL-6.
Both of which are pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Bacopa Monnieri may help boost cognitive function
Like Ginseng, Bacopa Monnieri may help improve mental performance.
In one study, the subjects took either 300mg of daily Bacopa Monnieri or a placebo for 12 weeks.
After the 12 weeks, the Bacopa Monnieri takers had bigger improvements in memory, learning rate and speed of visual information processing that the placebo takers.
In another study, 60 elderly subjects took either 300mg of Bacopa Monnieri, 600mg of Bacopa Monnieri, or a placebo each day for 12 weeks.
By the end of the study, the Bacopa Monnieri takers had bigger improvements in attention and memory than the placebo takers.
Ginseng is usually sold in capsules or as slices.

Ginseng Side Effects
While Ginseng is well-tolerated by most healthy adults, some people may experience the following side effects:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Blood pressure fluctuations
Women may experience other side effects too, including vaginal bleeding and breast tenderness.
Also, if you’re taking any other medications, then please consult a doctor before using Ginseng as it may interact poorly with other drugs.
Bacopa Monnieri Side Effects
Like Ginseng, Bacopa Monnieri is usually safe to supplement with, but some people have reported the following side effects:
- Upset stomach
Due to a lack of studies on its safety, pregnant women should avoid Bacopa Monnieri.
Also, Bacopa Monnieri may interact with certain medications, so please speak to a doctor before using it if you’re taking other medications.
