There aren’t many better exercises out there for 17-year-olds than push-ups.
They’re safe, effective, and work multiple muscle groups.
If you are 17, you might wonder how many push-ups you should be able to do.
And that’s exactly what we’re going to answer today.

How Many Push-Ups Should A 17 Year Old Do? (Short Answer)
You should be able to do 20-25 push-ups per set as a 17-year-old male. Whereas you should be able to do 13-18 push-ups as a 17-year-old female.
This is a rough estimate though and you’ll soon find out why!
How Many Push-Ups Should A 17 Year Old Do? (Long Answer)
Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to the number of push-ups a 17-year-old can do.
There are numerous points to consider which we’re now going to explain in more detail.
Your Gender
Males tend to have more upper body strength than females.
I’m sorry if this offends you ladies, but this is a scientific fact.
So, a 17-year-old male will typically be able to do more push-ups than a 17-year old female.
How Strong You Are
Now for a more obvious factor – your strength!
Some people are naturally very strong. While others are naturally weaker.
You should be able to do more push-ups if you’re a naturally strong person than your weaker friends.
The Push-Up Variation
Another key factor is the type of push-up you’re doing.
There are many variations of push-ups, and some of them (like handstand push-ups and diamond push-ups) are harder than others.
Easier variations include incline push-ups and regular push-ups.
It makes sense that the harder the push-up variation you do, the less reps you can do.
How Often You Do Push-Ups
The saying “practise makes perfect” is true, and push-ups are no exception.
The more often you do push-ups, the more you’ll be able to do over time as your chest muscles get stronger and bigger.
If you’re someone who does push-ups many times a week, you’ll probably be able to do more push-ups than someone who only does them once a week.
Your bodyweight
During push-ups, you push between 60%-70% of your total bodyweight.
So, heavier people have to push more weight during push-ups than lighter people.
(This explains why push-ups are harder if you weigh more.)
If you’re a heavy individual, then you can probably do less push-ups than someone who’s lighter.
The Tempo of Your Push-Ups
How fast you do your push-ups is another point to consider.
The slower you do push-ups, the harder they’ll be as your muscles are under tension for more time.
The result being, you’ll be able to do less push-ups.
Whereas if you do push-ups quickly, you should be able to do more.
How Many Push-Ups Should A 17 Year Old Do A Day?
As covered earlier, a 17-year-old will likely be able to do between 13-25 push-ups per set depending on whether they’re male or female.
If you’re a female, you should be able to do 2-4 sets of 13-18 push-ups in a day. Which gives a total of 26-72 push-ups.
Whereas if you’re a male, you should be able to do 3-5 sets of 20-25 push-ups in a day, totalling 60-125 push-ups.
Conclusion
In summary, the number of push-ups a 17-year-old should do depends on numerous factors and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the question.
That’s all for this article, but can you do push ups with scoliosis? Or why is it harder to do push ups on carpet?
Hope this helped!
