Sit-ups are a great exercise for 12-year-olds.
Well, for starters, you can do them from the comfort of your home.
(Most gyms have age restrictions, and you’ll be lucky to find one that allows 12-year-olds in.)
If you are 12, then you may be wondering how many sit-ups you should be able to do.
And that’s exactly what we’re going to cover today.
How Many Sit-Ups Should A 12 Year Old Do? (Short Answer)
If you’re a 12-year-old male, then you should be able to do 24 – 35 sit-ups per set. Whereas if you’re a 12-year-old female, you should be able to do 18 – 25 sit-ups per set.
This is a very rough range though and I’m now going to explain why.
How Many Sit-Ups Should A 12 Year Old Do? (Long Answer)
The Type of Sit-Up
There are many types of sit-ups, and some of them, like decline sit-ups, are harder than others.
Obviously, the harder the variation you do, the less reps you’ll be able to do.
How Fast You Do Sit-Ups
The tempo of your sit-ups is another key factor.
If you do sit-ups fast, your muscles are under tension for less time each rep.
Whereas if you do sit-ups slow, your muscles are under tension for more time each rep.
The more time your muscles are under tension each rep, the harder each rep is.
So, the slower you do sit-ups, the less reps you’ll be able to do.
How Often You Do Sit-Ups
You’ve probably heard the saying “practise makes perfect” and it’s true, especially when it comes to sit-ups.
If you practise sit-ups many times a week, over time, you’ll have stronger abs than someone who does them just once a week.
The stronger your abs, the more sit-ups you’ll be able to do.
Some people are naturally stronger than others.
If you’re a naturally strong 12-year-old, you should be able to do more sit-ups than someone who isn’t as strong.
Men are usually stronger than women.
I’m sorry if this offends you, but it’s a scientific fact.
So, a 12-year-old male will typically be able to do more sit-ups than a 12-year-old female.
How Tall Your Upper Body Is
During sit-ups, you curl your upper body off the ground.
So, the taller your upper body, the further you have to move it to complete a rep.
(In other words, you have a greater range of motion.)
This makes sit-ups harder for people with tall upper bodies. As a result, you should be able to do less sit-ups than someone with a shorter frame.
As just stated, you have to curl your upper body during sit-ups.
So, the heavier you are, the more weight you have to curl.
Obviously, this makes sit-ups harder, so the heavier you are, the less sit-ups you should be able to do.
How Many Sit-Ups Should A 12 Year Old Do In A Minute?
Again, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question.
It depends on all the factors we’ve discussed so far.
But on average, a 12-year-old will be able to do 20 – 35 sit-ups in a minute.
How Many Sit-Ups Should A 12 Year Old Do A Day?
As covered earlier, a 12-year-old should be able to do anywhere between 18 – 35 sit-ups depending on whether they’re a male or a female.
If you’re a male, you should be able to do 3-5 sets of 24 – 35 sit-ups in a day. So, a total of 72 – 175 sit-ups.
Whereas if you’re a female, you should be able to do 1-3 sets of 18 – 25 sit-ups in a day. So, a total of 18 – 75 sit-ups.
In summary, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the number of sit-ups a 12 year old should do as it depends on many different factors.
