Is Huel Keto Friendly? (Can You Take Huel On The Keto Diet?)

So, you’re currently on the ketogenic diet…

It’s going to plan.

You’re seeing progress.

But you’re dying to know whether meal replacement supplements are compatible with keto.

Well, you’ll be pleased to know that many meal replacement supplements are in fact suitable for keto.

Here is the answer to whether Huel products are keto friendly:

The Huel Black powder and Huel bars are keto friendly as they contain less than 50g of carbs. So, they can incorporated in a ketogenic diet as long as you lower your carb intake in other meals. But some of the other Huel products contain too many carbs to be considered keto friendly.

In this article, we’ll explain what Huel is, take a look at the nutritional breakdown of different Huel products, and give you some tips to stay in ketosis while consuming Huel products. We hope you enjoy!

What is Huel?

Huel is a meal replacement company that was set up in 2015 with the following goal:

To make nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food, with minimal impact on animals and the environment.

Their products are sourced from plant-based ingredients like oats, rice and coconut, and each Huel meal provides all essential nutrients.

Huel’s name is derived from Human + Fuel.

What Does Keto Friendly Mean?

Before diving into the Huel product range, it’s important to define what I mean by keto friendly.

In my eyes, something is keto friendly if you can consume it on a keto diet.

As you’re probably aware, keto diets are very low in carbohydrates, so for something to be ‘keto friendly’, it needs to be low carb.

Many people will tell you that something must be high in fat to be keto friendly.

Well let me tell you, that’s utter BS.

While you generally replace carbs with fats on the keto diet, that doesn’t mean something low in fat isn’t keto friendly.

Is Huel Black Keto Friendly?

Huel Black comes in 7 different flavours.

Their carbohydrate amount per serving is as below:

  • Vanilla – 24g
  • Banana – 23g
  • Chocolate – 24g
  • Peanut Butter – 25g
  • Salted Caramel – 23g
  • Coffee Caramel – 23g
  • Unflavored & Unsweetened – 20g

So, depending on the flavor you choose, Huel Black provides between 20g and 25g of carbs per serving.

For a keto diet to work, you need to be consuming less than 50g of carbs per day, so it could argued that each flavor of Huel Black is keto friendly.

Some may disagree and think this is too many carbs for one meal.

But the key factor is your daily intake of carbs.

So as long as you don’t exceed 50g over the course of the day, you should stay in ketosis.

Is Huel Ready-To-Drink Keto Friendly?

Huel Ready-To-Drink comes in 3 different flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla & Berry.

Their carbohydrate amount per serving is as below:

  • Berry – 40g
  • Vanilla – 37g
  • Chocolate – 41g

Again, these are all under 50g of carbs, so you could argue that they’re keto friendly.

But the issue here is once you’ve consumed Huel Ready-To-Drink, you’ve only got around 10g of carbs to play with for the rest of the day.

Unless you’re a steak-gorging carnivore, this would be a real challenge.

(Almost every food has some level of carbohydrates.)

Is Huel Hot & Savory Keto Friendly?

There are 6 different varieties of Huel Hot & Savory.

A breakdown of their carb amounts is as follows:

  • Sweet & Sour – 52g
  • Mexican Chilli – 52g
  • Tomato & Herb – 49g
  • Thai Green Curry – 51g
  • Spicy Indian Curry – 52g
  • Yellow Coconut Curry – 50g

With each variety containing around 50g of carbs, it’s fair to say that Huel Hot & Savory isn’t keto friendly.

Is Huel Powder Keto Friendly?

Huel Powder is sold in 9 different flavors.

Let’s take a look at their carb amounts:

  • Berry – 45g
  • Vanilla – 46g
  • Banana – 46g
  • Original – 45g
  • Chocolate – 45g
  • Caffe Latte – 47g
  • Peanut Butter – 45g
  • Salted Caramel – 46g
  • Unflavored & Unsweetened – 45g

Technically, you could argue that Huel Powder is keto friendly as all flavors are under 50g.

But as stated earlier, this would leave you with only 4g of carbs for the rest of the day.

And so I wouldn’t recommend Huel Powder if you’re following the ketogenic diet.

Are Huel Bars Keto Friendly?

You can buy Huel Bars in 6 different flavors.

The carb amount of each flavor per bar is as below:

  • Chocolate – 23g
  • Peanut Butter – 21g
  • Salted Caramel – 23g
  • Coffee Caramel – 23g
  • Chocolate Orange – 23g
  • Raspberry & White Chocolate – 23g

So yes – you can include a Huel Bar in a ketogenic diet, as long as you pay attention to the carb amounts of your other meals.

How To Stay In Ketosis When Taking Huel

Exercise After Taking Huel

When given the choice between carbs and fats, your body will always prioritise using carbs first.

So after taking one of the keto friendly Huel products, you can help maintain ketosis by exercising, as this will help use the carbs for energy.

Mix Huel Black With Water

To improve flavor, many people like to mix meal replacement powders with milk.

But when following a ketogenic diet, this is a big no no.

Why?

Well, a glass of skimmed milk contains around 11g of carbs.

So if you were to mix Huel Black with skimmed milk, you’re now consuming close to 40g of carbs in the shake.

On the other hand, water contains zero carbs, making it a much more suitable keto friendly mixer.

Limit Your Carb Intake In Your Other Meals

The only way you can take Huel and maintain ketosis is by limiting your carb intake elsewhere.

So, if you were to consume Huel Black/Huel Bar, then you’d have room for around 25g of carbs in other meals.

Use them wisely.

Conclusion: Can You Have Huel On The Keto Diet?

Well, it depends on the Huel products.

The Huel Black and Huel Bars are both compatible with the keto diet, as long you’re aware of your carb intake in other meals.

Whereas Huel Powder and Huel Hot & Savory simply have too many carbs to be enjoyed as part of a keto diet.

That’s all I have for this article, but is Juice Plus keto? Or perhaps you want to learn more about Ketophobia?
