What is Maca?
Maca (Lepidum Meveni) is an ancient vegetable that’s been grown as a root crop for thousands of years.
It has a similar appearance to the everyday turnip and can grow in a variety of colors, including black, purple, and yellow.
Maca grows in many South American countries like Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina, although it’s mainly cultivated in the Andes region.
Despite only recently spiking in popularity, Maca has been used since the days of the Inca warriors in Peru.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a type of tea that comes from the same plant as your everyday green tea (Camellia sinensis).
But what distinguishes Matcha from regular ol’ green tea is how it’s grown.
When producing Matcha, the tea leaves are covered from sunlight for many days before they’re harvested.

In another study, 23 subjects took either Matcha tea, 4g of Matcha in a bar, placebo tea, or a placebo bar.
They then performed various tasks to measure their mental performance.
Compared to the placebo groups, the Matcha users had significant improvement in memory, attention, and reaction time.
Also, Matcha contains more caffeine than regular green tea, which is known for its cognitive boosting properties.
Matcha may help protect your liver
According to research, Matcha may help protect your liver.
A study of 80 subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease investigated the effects of green tea extract on liver enzymes.
(High levels of liver enzymes are an indicator of liver damage.)
As part of the study, the subjects took either 500mg of green tea extract or a placebo per day for 90 days.
The results showed that the green tea extract significantly reduced the levels of liver enzymes.
(Interestingly, the placebo also reduced the levels of liver enzymes, although it wasn’t by a significant amount.)
Maca is typically sold as a powder or in capsules.

Maca is usually safe to supplement with, but Peruvian natives recommend boiling fresh Maca root, as it may have adverse effects.
Also, people with thyroid issues should use Maca with caution as it contains goitrogens, which may interfere with thyroid gland function.
