What is Maca?
Maca (Lepidium Mevini) is an indigenous root vegetable that’s been grown for over 2,000 years.
Used both nutritionally and medically, Maca grows in many South American countries, including Peru, Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia, but is most prominent in the Peruvian Andes.
Although its popularity has shot up in the last 10 years, it’s been used since the days of the Inca warriors in Peru.
Appearance-wise, Maca looks similar to turnips and its roots can grow in multiple colors, such as black, yellow or purple.
What is Moringa?
Moringa (Moringa Oleifera) is a plant native to India that can also grow in the tropics.
Now, what’s interesting about Moringa is that pretty much the whole plant is used for nutritional and medicinal purposes.
In other words, the leaves, bark, flowers, fruit, seeds and root are all used and consumed by people.
This is fairly rare for a plant, as usually only one part is consumed.

Benefits of Maca
Maca increases Libido
Many adults experience reduced sexual desire as they age.
This has been shown in a study on US women, where 27% of premenopausal women and 52% of menopausal women reported low sexual desire.
The outcome of this is more and more people turning towards natural supplements, like Maca, to boost their libido.
While a lot of libido-boosting supplements have been shown to be useless, Maca is supported by research.
For example, a study over 12 weeks measured the sexual desire of men who took either Maca or a placebo.
The results showed that the men who took Maca had a significant improvement in sexual desire after only 8 weeks.
Maca is loaded with nutrients
There’s no doubt that vitamins and minerals are crucial to health.
But nowadays, many people aren’t consuming enough thanks to addictive, nutrition-devoid junk food.

Free radicals can induce oxidative stress, which is a key mechanism in aging and many diseases.
Antioxidants are super important as they help neutralise free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a healthier you.
So you’ll be pleased to know that Moringa is loaded with antioxidants, including:
- Vitamin C
- Chlorogenic Acid
More importantly, research shows that ingesting Moringa significantly increases levels of antioxidants in the blood.
Moringa can help lower Cholesterol
Having high cholesterol has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease.

High blood sugar levels can lead to an energy crash, making you feel groggy, tired and weak.
Usually for me, this energy crash results in gorging on junk food, which then leads to even higher blood sugar levels and the cycle continues.
So to sustain your energy levels, you really want to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
Interestingly, many studies have shown that Moringa may help lower blood sugar levels.
For example, a study in 30 women showed that 7 grams of daily Moringa for 3 months reduced fasting blood sugar levels by 13.5% on average.
Maca is usually sold in the form of capsules or as a powder.

Maca Side Effects
Maca is generally considered safe, but Peruvian natives recommend boiling fresh Maca root as they believe it may have adverse effects.
Also, those with thyroid issues should use Maca with caution, as it contains substances called goitrogens which may interfere with thyroid function.
Moringa Side Effects
Moringa powder is usually well-tolerated with a low risk of side effects.
But those who are Diabetic, or are on blood sugar lowering medication should consult a Doctor before using Moringa, as it may result in a dangerous condition called Hypoglycaemia.
