While it’s a convenient solution for hard gainers to put on weight, the simple truth is that you can gain weight from eating more food.
So ultimately, it comes down to convenience.
Are you happy paying a fair bit of money to get a ton of calories in the form of an easy to drink shake?
Or would you rather save your hard-earned dollarz, and consume the same amount of calories from food?
There’s no right or wrong answer here, it all comes down to your personal preference.
(For those interested in my personal preference, if I wanted to bulk up, I’d simply eat more food.
Because I have a massive appetite, so consuming an extra 1000 calories from food is a walk in the park for me.
But if you struggle to squeeze an extra meal or 2 into you, then mass gainer might be the best option.)
Is It Cheaper To Make Your Own Mass Gainer?
It’s typically much cheaper to make your own mass gainer.
And in my eyes, making your own mass gainer is better than buying it from a shop.
Well, one reason is that you get to control the ingredients and dosages.
So if you hate the bitter taste of creatine, then no problemo – you can just leave it out!
And if you want to minimize fat gain, then you can add much fewer carbs than what’s in a typical mass gainer.
Also, you can buy in bulk the individual ingredients so that you save a ton of money.
A real win-win.

- 2 oz of Heavy Cream
- 2 cups of Whole Milk
- 2 tbsp of Peanut Butter

What To Do If You Can’t Afford Mass Gainer?
If money is an issue (when is it not?), your best bet is to make the homemade mass gainer shake as above. This should be just as effective as any mass gainer for helping you gain weight.
(You will only gain weight when you consume more calories than you burn. So whether you’re getting your calories from food, mass gainer, or the homemade shake, your body won’t know the difference.)
Are More Expensive Mass Gainers Better?
The more expensive mass gainers tend to be from premium brands, so a lot of the price that you’re paying is simply due to the brand and marketing.
So you could argue that the expensive mass gainers aren’t that much better.
That said, some pricey mass gainers like ON Serious Mass contain unique ingredients, such as their vitamin and mineral blend.
This gives the mass gainer more health benefits, although it won’t make you gain more weight.
If you can only afford the cheaper mass gainers, they’ll do the job just fine.
