What is Matcha?
Matcha is a type of tea that comes from the same plant as your usual green tea, called Camellia sinensis.
But what makes Matcha different from normal green tea is the way that it’s grown.
When making Matcha, the tea leaves are protected from sunlight for many days before they’re harvested.
This process increases the level of chlorophyll in the tea leaves, which gives Matcha its renown bright green appearance.
What is Caffeine?
Caffeine (trimethylxanthine) is considered the most widely consumed drug in the world.
It’s a stimulant that’s naturally found in the fruits, leaves, and beans of over 60 plants across the globe.
The most common sources of Caffeine are cocoa beans, tea leaves, and coffee.
In fact, the word Caffeine is derived from the word kaffee, meaning coffee in German.
Benefits of Matcha
Matcha may boost mental function
Many people drink Matcha tea for its brain boosting properties.
In one study, 12 elderly people who took 2g of green tea powder per day for 3 months had improved cognitive function.
In another study, 23 people took either Matcha tea, 4g of Matcha powder in a bar, placebo tea, or a placebo bar.
They then performed a variety of tasks to measure their mental function.
Interestingly, those in the Matcha groups had significant improvement in memory, attention, and reaction time compared to the placebo groups.
Matcha may help protect your liver
According to research, Matcha may be liver protective.
A study of 80 NAFLD patients looked at the effects of green tea extract on liver enzymes.
(High levels of liver enzymes are a proxy for liver damage.)
During the study, the patients took either 500mg of green tea extract or a placebo each day for 3 months.
The results showed that the green tea extract significantly reduced the levels of liver enzymes.
Matcha is antioxidant-rich
A build up of free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which is believed to play a key role in aging and many serious diseases.
Antioxidants are powerful molecules that can help combat free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a healthier you.
Matcha is high in plant compounds known as catechins, which function as antioxidants in the body.
And unlike green tea, you actually consume the leaf meaning you consume more antioxidants.
(One estimate suggests that Matcha may contain 137x more catechins than other types of green tea!)
Matcha may help with fat loss
Many thermogenics and weight loss supplements are packed with green tea extract.
And for a good reason too.
One study found that taking Guarana and a green tea mixture significantly increased energy expenditure over 24 hours, when compared with a placebo.
Another study found that taking green tea extract mid-workout can boost fat burning by 17%.

Caffeine may help improve exercise performance
Research suggests that Caffeine may help enhance exercise performance.
One study found that Caffeine reduced perceived tension by 5.6%, which may make your workouts feel easier.
Another study found that 5mg of Caffeine per kilo of body weight boosted endurance by 5%, when taken an hour before exercise.
Caffeine may help reduce the risk of Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes is an awful disease that’s characterized by high-blood sugar levels.
It can cause some nasty symptoms, like:
- Sight loss
- Excessive thirst
- Numb hands and feet
According to research, Caffeine may help protect against Type 2 Diabetes.
For example, a review of 6 studies concluded that people who consume the most Caffeine have up to a 30% lower risk of developing Diabetes.
Caffeine may boost mental health and function
Like Matcha, Caffeine may help improve cognitive function.
In one study, Caffeine improved attention, awareness, and reaction time when compared to a placebo.
As for mental health, a review of 12 studies found that Caffeine users have a 16% lower risk of depression.
Caffeine may help with fat loss
Like Matcha, Caffeine may help with fat loss.
A study of 8 men found that taking 10mg of Caffeine per kilo of body weight increased fat oxidation by 13%.
Another study found that 300mg of Caffeine can boost energy expenditure by 79 calories, when taken daily.
