In my ever-growing Supplement Comparison Series, I take two supplements and break them down based on cost, benefits, side effects and more. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you’ll have a better idea of which one to take.
In this piece, we’ll take a look at Matcha vs Chlorella.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a type of tea that comes from the same plant as your regular green tea.
(Called Camellia sinensis.)
But what differs Matcha from everyday green tea is the way that Matcha is grown.
When producing Matcha, the tea leaves are covered from sunlight for many days before they’re harvested.
This process boosts the chlorophyll levels in the tea leaves, which gives Matcha it’s renown bright green appearance.
What is Chlorella?
Chlorella is a single-celled green algae that grows in fresh water.
Its name is derived from the words chlor, meaning green in Greek, and ella, meaning a small thing in Latin.
Although it was only discovered towards the end of the 1800s, it’s believed that Chlorella has existed for millions of years.
As well as being used as a health supplement, Chlorella is also used as a biodiesel.
Benefits of Matcha
Matcha is rich in antioxidants
Free radical build-up can induce oxidative stress, which is thought to play a key role in aging and many age-related diseases.
Antioxidants are powerful molecules which can help neutralise free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a healthier you.
Matcha is loaded with plant compounds, known as catechins, which work as antioxidants in the body.
And unlike green tea, you actually ingest the leaf meaning you consume more antioxidants.
(One estimate suggests that Matcha may contain 137x more catechins than other types of green tea!)
Matcha may help with fat loss
Many popular fat burners and toning supplements are packed with green tea extract.
And for a solid reason.
One study found that taking green tea extract mid-workout can increase fat burning by 17%.
Another study showed that taking Guarana and a green tea mixture significantly increased calorie burning over 24 hours, compared to a placebo.
Matcha may enhance cognitive function
Lots of people drink Matcha tea for its brain boosting effects.
In one study, 23 subjects took either Matcha tea, 4g of powdered Matcha in a bar, placebo tea or a placebo bar.
They then performed a series of tasks to measure their cognitive function.
Compared to the placebo groups, those who took Matcha in either form had significant improvement in attention, memory, and reaction time.
In another study, 12 elderly subjects who took 2g of daily green tea powder for 3 months had improved mental function.
Matcha may help protect your liver
Research suggests that Matcha may be liver protective.
A study of 80 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients investigated the effects of green tea extract on liver enzymes.
(High levels of liver enzymes are a marker for liver damage.)
As part of the study, the subjects took either 0.5g of daily green tea extract or a placebo for 3 months.
The results showed that the green tea extract significantly reduced the levels of liver enzymes.
Benefits of Chlorella
Chlorella is nutrient-rich
While the term “Superfood” is thrown around too often these days, Chlorella’s nutritional profile is eye catching to say the least.

Each of these play a vital role in keeping you healthy.
Chlorella may strengthen your immune system
Your immune system is crucial as it helps fight off viral and bacterial infections.
It’s a complex system that’s comprised of multiple cells that spring into action when a foreign invader enters your body.
Although the research is fairly limited, Chlorella has been shown to boost the immune response in human and animal studies.
For example, a study over 8 weeks found that adults who took Chlorella showed markers of enhanced immune function.
Another study showed that men who took Chlorella produced more antibodies than when they took a placebo.
Chlorella may help detox your body
Although heavy metals like iron and copper are essential in small amounts, they can be toxic if they accumulate over time.
For example, iron build-up may increase your risk of heart failure. (Source)
Well, in animals, Chlorella has been shown to reduce the heavy metal toxicity of many vital organs, including the brain and liver. (Source)
Chlorella has been shown to lower the amount of other toxins too, like Dioxin, which is a potent hormone disruptor. (Source)
Chlorella may boost aerobic endurance
While just one study has looked at the effect Chlorella has on endurance, the results were fairly promising.
In the study, the subjects took either 6g of daily Chlorella or a placebo for 4 weeks.
The results showed that the Chlorella takers could saturate their lungs with oxygen more effectively than the placebo takers.
While the reason for this isn’t fully understood, it’s believed to be due to the high BCAA content of Chlorella.
(Lots of studies have shown the effectiveness of BCAAs at boosting aerobic performance.)
Matcha is usually sold as a powder.
For an ounce of Matcha powder, you can expect to pay around $7.
Chlorella is typically sold as a powder or in tablets.

Matcha Side Effects
When sensibly consumed, Matcha is well-tolerated by healthy people.
But due to its caffeine content, those who over do it might notice the following symptoms:
Chlorella Side Effects
The FDA has deemed Chlorella “generally recognized as safe”.
But some people have reported nausea and upset stomach after taking Chlorella.
Also, since Chlorella affects the immune system, those taking immune system medications or who have immunodeficiency should speak to a doctor before using it.
