What is Matcha?

Moringa (Moringa Oleifera) is a plant native to India that also grows in the tropics.
The interesting thing about Moringa is that pretty much the whole plant is consumed for its health boosting properties.
In other words, the bark, root, seeds, fruit, leaves and flowers are all used and ingested by people.
To be clear, this is super rare for a plant as usually only one or two parts are consumed.
(The tea leaves in Matcha for example.)
Benefits of Matcha
Matcha is antioxidant-rich
A build-up of free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which is believed to play an important role in aging and many serious diseases.
Antioxidants are powerful molecules which can help combat free radicals, resulting in less oxidative stress and a healthier you.
Matcha is full of natural plant compounds, known as catechins, which function as antioxidants.
And unlike green tea, you actually consume the leaf meaning you consume more antioxidants.
(An estimate suggests that Matcha contains 137x more catechins than other types of green tea!)
Matcha may help with weight loss
Many popular fat burners and shredding supplements are loaded with green tea extract.
And for good reason too.
A study of 14 people showed that taking a green tea and Guarana mixture significantly increased calorie burning over 24 hours, compared to a placebo.
Another study found that taking green tea extract during exercise can increase fat oxidation by 17%.
Matcha may be liver-protective
According to research, Matcha may help protect your liver.
A study of 80 subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease investigated the effects of green tea extract on liver enzymes.
(High levels of liver enzymes are an indicator of liver damage.)
During the study, the patients took either 500mg of green tea extract or a placebo each day for 3 months.
The results showed that the green tea extract significantly reduced the levels of liver enzymes.
Matcha may enhance mental performance
Many people drink Matcha for its brain boosting effects.
In one study, 12 elderly people who took 2g of green tea powder per day for 3 months had improved cognitive function.
In another study, 23 subjects took either Matcha tea, 4g of Matcha powder in a bar, placebo tea or a placebo bar.
They then took part in a series of tasks to measure their mental function.
Interestingly, those in the Matcha groups had significant improvement in memory, attention, and reaction time compared to those in the placebo groups.

Moringa may help lower Cholesterol
It’s widely accepted that high cholesterol levels increase your risk of heart disease.
If you’re concerned about high cholesterol levels, then you might want to supplement with Moringa as research shows it’s effective at lowering them.
Moringa is antioxidant-rich
Like Matcha, Moringa is loaded with antioxidants, such as:

Moringa powder is well-tolerated by healthy adults with a low risk of side effects.
In fact, no adverse effects were found in people who took 50g of daily Moringa for 28 days. (Source)
But as Moringa can lower your blood sugar levels, Diabetics and those taking blood sugar lowering medication should speak to a doctor before taking it.
