In this post, we’ll take a look at Moringa vs Fenugreek.

What is Moringa?
Moringa (Moringa Oleifera) is an indigenous tree native to India, Pakistan and Nepal that also grows in tropics.
Interestingly, pretty much the whole plant is used for its health boosting properties.
This is quite rare for a medicinal plant, as usually only one or two parts are consumed.
(The root of Maca for example.)
Due to its medicinal properties, Moringa has been given names like “mother’s best friend” and “miracle tree”.
What is Fenugreek?
Fenugreek is a versatile herb native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia.
Whilst often used as a medicinal herb, some people use the seeds of Fenugreek to cook and others use the leaves as a vegetable.
(The seeds supposedly smell and taste like maple syrup!)
Some people even apply Fenugreek directly to the skin to treat local pain, such as swelling, eczema and wounds.
Benefits of Moringa
Moringa is rich in Antioxidants
A build up of free radicals can lead to oxidative stress, which is thought to play a role in aging and many diseases.
Thankfully, nature has provided molecules that can neutralise free radicals, known as antioxidants.
So, the more antioxidants you consume, the less oxidative stress you’ll have.
(Making you look and feel younger…)
Moringa is rich in the following antioxidants:
- Vitamin C
- Chlorogenic Acid
It’s pleasing to see that using Moringa boosts levels of antioxidants in your blood too.
Moringa may lower blood sugar levels
Thanks to addictive junk food, many people have higher-than-ideal blood sugar levels.
But high blood sugar levels are toxic to your body.
So, your body responds with a huge insulin spike, which ironically leads to low blood sugar levels.
This sudden drop in blood sugar can make you feel hangry, tired, and lethargic.
So, the best way to avoid this energy crash is to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
Well interestingly, lots of research has shown Moringa’s ability to lower blood sugar levels.
For example, one study showed that 7 grams of daily Moringa for 3 months lowered fasting blood sugar levels by around 13.5%.
Moringa can help lower Cholesterol
Many doctors believe that people with high cholesterol levels are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
So, lowering your cholesterol levels is a good way to reduce your risk.
Research supports the use of Moringa to lower your cholesterol.
Moringa may reduce inflammation
Inflammation can be your best friend or worst enemy.
On one hand, acute inflammation can be lifesaving.
This is the type of inflammation you have when your body is fighting an infection, and it’s the inflammatory response which helps clear the infection.
On the other hand, chronic inflammation can shorten your life.
This is the type of inflammation that’s low-level and can build up over time when you eat a bad diet, avoid exercise, and get poor sleep.
Why’s it bad?
Well, a lot of solid research has linked chronic inflammation to a range of diseases, including stroke, cancer and heart disease.
Now time for the good news…
Moringa is rich in compounds called isothiocyanates which scientists believe are anti-inflammatory.

Benefits of Fenugreek
Fenugreek may enhance libido
Many cultures have included Fenugreek in their diets for thousands of years to boost their sexual desire.
This has been backed up by research, as recent studies have suggested that it may enhance libido in both men and women.
For example, a study of 60 men had them take either 1200mg of Fenugreek or a placebo every day for 6 weeks.
By the end of the study, the Fenugreek takers reported a 28% increase in libido, while the placebo takers had a decrease in libido.
Another study of 80 women had them take either Fenugreek or a placebo every day for 8 weeks.
The results showed that the Fenugreek uses had a significant increase in sexual desire and arousal compared to the placebo group.
Fenugreek may help lower blood sugar levels
Like Moringa, Fenugreek is often used as a supplement to help control blood sugar levels, and research shows it’s highly effective at doing so.
One study of diabetic subjects had them eat bread which contained Fenugreek flour and then normal bread 1 week apart.
The results showed that the Fenugreek bread helped reduce insulin resistance, which is a key hallmark in type 2 diabetes.
Another study of 60 diabetic subjects had them take either Fenugreek in capsules or on biscuits.
The study concluded that 2g of Fenugreek in either form can be successfully used to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Fenugreek may enhance milk production in new mothers
Fenugreek is often used as a galactagogue in new mothers, and it’s usually consumed as a tea or in capsule form by nursing women.
One study divided 66 mother-baby pairs into 3 groups.
One group drank Fenugreek tea every day, another group drank a placebo tea, and the last group drank no tea.
By the end of the study, the women who drank the Fenugreek tea had significantly higher breast milk volume.
The babies of this group had significantly higher weight gain than the others too.
(Note: Fenugreek can have adverse effects in pregnant women. So if you’re taking it as a galactagogue, then please only do so after you’ve had your baby.)
Moringa is typically sold as a powder or in capsules.
Here are some standard prices for these:

Fenugreek is sold in lots of different forms, including seeds, powder, and capsules.
Typical prices for these are:
- Seeds: $7 for 8 Oz

Moringa Side Effects
Moringa is safe for most people with a small risk of side effects.
But those who are diabetic or are taking blood sugar lowering medication should consult a doctor before using Moringa.
Fenugreek Side Effects
Fenugreek is safe for most people, although the following side effects have been reported:
- “Maple Syrup” scented sweat/urine.
And like Moringa, Fenugreek can lower blood sugar levels so diabetics or people taking blood sugar lowering medication should speak to a doctor before using Fenugreek.
The following groups should NOT take Fenugreek:
- Pregnant women
- People with allergies to plants in the Fabaceae family, i.e. peanuts
